The central idea of VAT is that tax is charged at each stage on the value added, and the mechanism that achieves it is input credit. A registered business subtracts the VAT it paid on eligible purchases from the VAT it collected on sales and remits only the difference. That subtraction is the input tax credit. Eligibility carries conditions. The purchase must be for the purpose of the taxable business, supported by a proper invoice showing the supplier's PAN and the VAT charged, and the goods or services must have arrived or been consumed. Credit is refused on many personal items, entertainment and certain specified purchases, and claiming those creates a liability at assessment. The discipline is documentation. An old invoice without full details is worthless even if the expense was real, and the department cross-checks credits against the returns of suppliers. Audits commonly target overstated credits, so the safe habit is to verify every invoice at the gate, because a credit that looks good on the return but fails on the invoice costs principal, interest and penalty later.
